57 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Poetry Contest, where her students placed first for two years in a row for anthology. In addition, she is proud to have accompanied the principal of the school to Washington, D.C., to receive the Blue Ribbon Award, which was given to schools cited for exemplary high performance by the U.S. Department of Education. The teachers at the school had a brick installed in the Walt Whitman Walkway. Alongside her primary teaching endeavors, Ms. Petrola has been a self-employed author. First writing “Primitive Dancer” in 2014, she has since authored “Woman on the Edge of Time” and three volumes of “The Healing Tree,” which was published through Bookstand Publishing in 2015. Her books can be purchased at Barnes & Noble and on Amazon. Civically involved as well, she has volunteered for beach cleanups and for Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society, ALS Ride for Life, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Greenpeace. She is a conflict mediator and counselor, as well as a swimming instructor. Ms. Petrola holds a BA in elementary education and teaching from Bethany College and an MA in liberal studies from Stony Brook University. She has maintained affiliation with the Mount Sinai Teachers Association, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association. Named Professional of the Year in Education in 2010, she also received a Certificate of Recognition from Elite American Educators during her tenure as well. A native of Mineola, New York, Ms. Petrola enjoys designing jewelry, writing, swimming, kayaking, biking, running and rescuing Irish setters in her spare time. She has previously rescued and adopted eight Irish setters and now currently owns two. S upported by more than 40 years of experience in academia, Renee Danette Petrola is a retired sixth grade writing teacher who previously worked in the Mount Sinai School District in New York from 1970 until her retirement in 2013.
