60 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I nspired to enter the sciences due to the influence of Sputnik, Dr. Mark A. Ratner was also influenced by his uncle, who was a physician. Teaching Dr. Ratner how to ask questions and retrieve answers, his uncle was a passionate professional who served as a significant inspiration. Attending Harvard University, Dr. Ratner received a BA in 1964, followed by a PhD from Northwestern University in 1969. The following year, he received an honorary amanuensis fromAarhus University in Denmark, followed by an additional honorary akademischer rat from the Technical University of Munich in West Germany in 1971. He commenced his career at New York University, where he served as an assistant professor from 1971 to 1975. From there, he transferred to Northwestern University as a professor of chemistry from 1975 until attaining emeritus status. During this time, he was also a Dow Research Professor between 1988 and 1990 and associate dean of arts and sciences from 1980 to 1984. Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Ratner has been a visiting professor at Rush Medical College at Rush University since 1990 and the director of electrochemical industries in Israel since 1980. Earlier in his career, he was a consultant for the U.S. Army in Huntsville, Illinois, and a lecturer for IBM. Civically involved as well, he has sat on the board of governors of Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem since 1996, as well as on the board of directors of Hillel International since 1984. During his tenure, Dr. Ratner further contributed articles and manuscripts to professional journals and co-authored several books. He maintains affiliation with the American Physical Society, the American Chemical Society and Sigma Xi. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Ratner has been honored for his accomplishments. A fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation from 1973 to 1976, he was inducted into the Danish Academy and the Institute for Advanced Study. He was also listed in numerous Who’s Who publications. Looking toward the future, he intends to understand the nature of bonding between molecules that are not chemically bonded. MARK A.
