65 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D r. Laurence Thomas was a talentedwriter in his youthwho sought a career in academia due to the encouragement of his undergraduate professors. He received affirmations from these educators and decided to become a professor himself in an effort to enrich the lives of students, much like his professors enriched his life. After earning a PhB from the University of Maryland and MA from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Thomas received a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in 1976. Since 1989, Dr. Thomas has served as a professor of political science and philosophy in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He focuses his teachings and studies on the structures of moral and political behavior, as well as ways in which the self-identity of individuals is formed and maintained. These models are subsequently applied to instances of egregious behavior, such as American slavery or the Holocaust. He has contributed more than 100 articles to professional journals, including “Upside-Down Equality: A Response to Kantian Thought” in 2003, “Autonomie” in 2000, and “Sexual Orientation and Human Rights” in 1999. He was also featured in the education section of The New York Times in 1992 and authored “Living Morally: A Psychology of Moral Character” in 1989. Dr. Thomas has been dividing his time since 1996 between Syracuse and France, where he has acquired a wealth of intellectual insight from the books he has read while overseas. Among themost notable aspects of his career, he is most proud of his philosophical essays. The subjects of gratitude and trust have been central points in his essays, which is reflected in how he treats his students. As a testament to his success, Dr. Thomas was named Teacher of the Year by Syracuse University in 1993, having previously received the National Endowment for the Humanities Award in 1981. He was also selected for inclusion in the 71 st edition of Who’s Who in America in 2018. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue writing and reflecting on how the world has changed in light of technological advances and how they relate to self-worth.
