70 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION in the Materials Center at Stanford University. A fellow of the Materials Research Society, Dr. Whittingham has been honored with several accolades over the course of his career. The recipient of the Turnbull Award from the Materials Research Society in 2018, he was previously presented with the Senior Scientist Award from the International Society for Solid State Ionics, the Distinguished Research Award from the Binghamton section of the American Chemical Society, and the Lois B. DeFleur Faculty Prize for Academic Achievement. In addition, Binghamton University gave him the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence and the Outstanding Research Award. He was a former JSPS Fellow of the physics department at Tokyo University. Dr. Whittingham has been married to wife Georgina since 1969 and has two children and three grandchildren. He is listed in several Who’s Who publications and attributes his success to his perseverance and passion. I nspired by his high school teachers who introduced him to the fields of engineering and chemistry, Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham has been serving as a distinguished professor of chemistry, materials science and engineering at Binghamton University since 1988, having also acted as director of the NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Storage. A patentee, he is most renowned for discovering rechargeable lithium batteries and methods for making intercalation batteries, as well as discovering a method for making TiS2 mixed material cathodes, which are high-brightness luminescent displays. The author and editor of 350 papers in the field, he also penned five books within his area of expertise. Dr. Whittingham holds a BA in chemistry, as well as an MA and DPhil from the University of Oxford. Prior to his current appointments, he served as vice chair of the board of directors of the Research Foundation, vice provost for research at Binghamton University, and director of physical sciences for the Schlumberger company. Likewise, he was the manager of Chemical Engineering Technology, director of Solid State Sciences, and head of the group of Solid State Chemical Physics.
