74 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D r. John David Zimbrick has been interested in the mechanisms of nature from a physical point of view since an early age. He earned a BA in physics from Carleton College, and an MS and PhD in radiation biophysics from the University of Kansas. As his years of academic study ended, he applied his knowledge of the inner workings of nature to cellular and sub-cellular interactions. During his doctoral studies, he became fascinated by the health effects of radiation and sought to understand how radiation affected living cells at the DNA and cellular levels. After earning his MS degree, Dr. Zimbrick worked as a physicist at the IIT Research Institute and later served from assistant professor to full professor at the University of Kansas between 1969 and 1984. Thereafter, he served as a health science administrator of the Radiation Study Section at the National Institutes of Health, head of the Biology and Chemistry Department at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and director of the Board on Radiation Effects Research at the National Academy of Sciences. He decided to return to academia and received an appointment as a full professor at Purdue University from1997 to 2003 before transitioning to Colorado State University, serving as a professor and head of the Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences Department from 2003 until attaining emeritus status in 2012. The former President of the Radiation Research Society, Dr. Zimbrick is a Fellow of the Health Physics Society and amember of the Biophysical Society. He received the Robert F. Landolt Outstanding Teacher Award from Purdue University, the Distinguished Service Award and Excellence in Mentoring Award from the Radiation Research Society, the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the Health Physics Society, and a Distinguished Achievement Award from Carleton College. Outside of hiswork in education, Dr. Zimbrick is amusic aficionadowho has hosted his own jazz public radio program called “Jazz Cornucopia” for more than 62 years. He plays new jazz albums by contemporary artists, as well as classic jazz fromhis vast collection and has interviewed prominent musicians such as Duke Ellington.
