Parmley is a respected physician and educator who most recently served the University of California San Francisco as a professor of medicine from 1976 until attaining emeritus status in 2003. During this time, he was also the Araxe Vilensky endowed chair in cardiology and chief of the cardiac clinic, having previously been an associate professor of medicine at both UC San Francisco and UC Los Angeles. Prior to serving UC San Francisco, Dr. Parmley held several medical appointments at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Certified to practice medicine in California, Dr. Parmley is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Disease. Earning a BA summa cum laude from Harvard University in 1957, he subsequently received an MD from Johns Hopkins University in 1963 and completed an internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore between 1963 and 1965. During his tenure, Dr. Parmley has sat as chairman of numerous cardiovascular boards and served on multiple committees through the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American College of Physicians, he also held myriad visiting professorships and named lectures at various institutions between 1982 and 2002. He was president of the American College of Cardiology in 1985 and 1986 and was editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology for 10 years. In recognition of his profound contributions to medicine and academia, Dr. Parmley has been the recipient of a number of accolades, such as the Special Award from the Laennec Society, Council on Clinical Cardiology and American Heart Association; Heart Saver Award from the Save a Heart Foundation; Distinguished Service Award from the BrighamYoung University Academy of Medicine; and Theodore and Susan Cummings Humanitarian Award from the American College of Cardiology.
