56 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Engineers and North American Membrane Society, Dr. Paul has been a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers, National Academy of Engineering, American Chemical Society and Sigma Xi. In light of his achievements, he has accrued myriad accolades. First receiving the University of Texas Student Engineering Council Award in 1972, he then received a Doolittle Award from the American Chemical Society in 1973, Educational Service Award from the Plastics Institute of America in 1975, Engineering Award from Teaching General Dynamics Corp. in 1977, and Joe J. King Professional Engineering Achievement Award in 1981. Later in his career, he was honored with the Alan S. Michaels Award and the Founders Award from the North American Membrane Society in 2005, a Distinguished Service Citation from the University of Wisconsin in 2000, and an E.V. Murphree Award in Industrial and Engineering Chemistry from the American Chemical Society in 1999. I nterested in chemical engineering while he was just a high school student, Dr. Donald Ross Paul pursued formal education at North Carolina State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1961. Transferring to the University of Wisconsin- Madison soon thereafter, he received a Master of Science in 1963 and PhD in 1965. While studying toward an undergraduate degree, he served as a chemical engineering researcher for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. in Richmond, Virginia, from 1960 to 1961 before becoming an instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until 1965. Relocating to Durham, North Carolina, he became a chemical engineering researcher at the Chemstrand Research Center before joining the University of Texas at Austin in 1967. Serving the university for the remainder of his career, Dr. Paul was an assistant professor, associate professor and chairman of the Department of Chemical Engineering before becoming a full professor in 1973, a position he still holds today. Alongside this appointment, he has been a Regents chair of chemical engineering since 1985, director of the Center for Polymer Research since 1981, director of the Texas Materials Institute since 1998 and senior chair of engineering since 2001.
