I nterested in military life from a formative age, Gerald A. Johnson joined the junior ROTC program while in high school. He continued in the ROTC program while attending the University of Illinois. In 1964, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, serving in hospital administration. He continued to advance in his chosen career field, rising to the rank of colonel. He retired from active duty in 1989. In recognition of his military service, he was awarded the Legion of Merit. For the next few years, Mr. Johnson served in Coastal Healthcare Group in Durham, North Carolina, first as vice president of Coastal Government Services and later as president of Signum Primary Care. The Coastal family of companies managed medical clinics and provided contractual health professionals to military hospitals and commercial stand-alone clinics. Signum was established to provide a network of medical clinics in the Mid-Atlantic States. Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Johnson served in a number of local, state and national volunteer organizations, including the Military Officers Association of America, Kiwanis International and the Boy Scouts of America.
