Herbert Silverstein is renowned for being the founder of the “Round and Oval Window Reinforcement for Hyperacusis” operation, which aids patients who suffer from severe noise intolerance. First performing the operation in 2009, he has performed it on 50 patients to date who travel from across the globe to undergo the procedure. Conducting innovative research in his areas of interest, he is also the president of both the Silverstein Institute and the Ear Research Foundation. He previously served as a clinical instructor and teaching fellow in otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, from Dickinson College and a Master of Science in physiology and MD from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, Dr. Silverstein is board certified by and a diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head andNeck Surgery. He completed two residencies in surgery and otolaryngology at the Philadelphia Veterans Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary between 1962 and 1966. Influenced by his father, who was a neuropsychiatrist, Dr. Silverstein has written three papers onhis procedure for hyperacusis, whichhe has presented at national meetings. He is also the author of 250 scientific papers and has written six books. In recognition of his prestige, the City of Sarasota proclaimed a day in his honor, titled “Dr. Herbert Silverstein Day.” Likewise, he has accrued myriad accolades over the years, such as anAward of Merit from the American Otological Society, a Presidential Citation and a Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology, and features in Best Doctors in America. Town&Country named him the Best Medical Specialist in the U.S., and he also received the Charles Burr Award for Research from Philadelphia General Hospital. A guest of honor and speaker at institutions across the world, Dr. Silverstein encourages young, aspiring physicians to think outside of the box. In his spare time, he is a jazz pianist and has written 60 songs, published 14 musical CDs, and written three volumes of jazz harmony and improvisation.
