133 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS P roficient in the areas of integrative medicine and its application to general wellness, Dr. Harry D. Simmons Jr. has had more than 60 years of medical and scientific experience. He has worked as medical director for the Center for Integrated Therapies since 2003 and New Hope Alternative Therapy Research from 1997 to 2002, both in Cleveland, Ohio. He works with professional therapists to provide individualized treatment regimens for clients, providing massage, acupuncture, counseling and nutritional guidance for people with pain or other ongoing symptoms. Believing that he would pursue a career in science since high school, Dr. Simmons attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 1955 to 1960, earning a BS in chemistry. He then attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a PhD in chemistry in 1966. He worked at the Technical University of Munich as a NSF Research Fellow from 1967 to 1968. He was offered a job as an evening shift clinical laboratory supervisor at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, where he became aware of the correlation of requests for analysis with doctors’ diagnoses of their patient’s symptoms. Subsequently, he obtained an MD at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 1977. Dr. Simmons was a resident at Berkshire Medical Center from 1977 to 1981, a research fellow at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1981 to 1985, and a pathology resident at Mount Sinai Medical Center from 1985 to 1987 and Montefiore Medical Center from 1987 to 1991. He became a board- certified anatomic pathologist by the American Boards of Pathology in 1991. Dr. Simmons was a staff pathologist at Huntington Medical Center from 1991 to 1993 and at Timken Mercy Medical Center from 1994 to 1995. He was also a medical editor at ProEd Communications from 1996 to 1997. Dr. Simmons has participated in numerous professional activities, including the Community Advisory Board of the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit at CaseWestern Research University since 1997.
