97 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING I nitially contemplating pursuing electrical engineering, John F. Rekus, MS, PE, FAIHA, switched industries to industrial hygiene after discovering the field and developing an interest in it. Also known as occupational hygiene, industrial hygiene is the recognition, evaluation and control of hazards at work that could potentially affect the health and wellbeing of workers. Earning his industrial hygiene license in 1977, Mr. Rekus first served as a public health specialist for the Baltimore County Department of Health in 1972 before becoming a staff industrial hygienist for Maryland Occupational Safety and Health in 1974. He soon elevated ranks to regional senior hygienist and chief of the measure and caliber department until he left the company in 1979. Thereafter, Mr. Rekus served as a senior industrial hygienist and technical coordinator for Maryland Railroad Safety and Health before settling into his final role of senior safety engineer with the National Security Agency (NSA). He served the NSA for 20 fruitful years until his retirement in 2014. Drawing upon a BS in chemistry from Loyola University Maryland and MS from Indiana University, Mr. Rekus has continued to serve the University of Baltimore as a business lecturer since 1988, having formerly taught at the Community College of Baltimore County and consulted for other organizations in the field. Since 2015, he has remained an industrial advisory boardmember in the engineering department of Loyola University Maryland. In addition, he maintains affiliation with the Baltimore County Office of Homeland Security and the Boy Scouts of America, as well as the American Chemical Society and the American Academy of Industrial Hygiene. Impressively, he is a fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. The author of myriad technical articles for esteemed journals, Mr. Rekus wrote “Complete Confined Spaces Handbook” in 1994. As a testament to his military service in the U.S. Navy, he was presented with a Commendation Medal. In addition, he was recognized with inclusion in the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the East in 1990. However, he cites a career highlight to be watching his students go on to positions of authority.
