98 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I nitially growing up on a farm, Dr. Walter M. Sanders III attended the Virginia Military Institute and received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 1953 before being commissioned as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force for the following two years. After his honorable discharge, he attended Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a Master of Science in sanitary engineering in 1956 and PhD in environmental engineering in 1964. Commencing his professional career after receiving a master’s degree, Dr. Sanders began working as a sanitary engineering officer with the U.S. Public Health Service for eight years before transferring to the Environmental Research Laboratory with the Environmental Protection Agency in Athens, Georgia, until 1976. Remaining with the laboratory for the following nine years, he subsequently served as an associate director of water quality research until 1985. From 1985 until his retirement, he was an environmental consultant to the Egyptian government for the Nile River. Although retired, Dr. Sanders continues to serve as a research associate and graduate faculty member of ecology at the University of Georgia. He has also maintained involvement with the Northeast Georgia Water Resources Advisory Committee and the Chesapeake Bay Program, serving as chairman of the technical advisory committee. Sitting on the board of directors and acting as district governor of Sigma Xi since 1983 and 1984, respectively, he is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and Rotary International, where he is past president and current district governor. Civically involved, Dr. Sanders has been an elder of the Friendship Presbyterian Church since 1966. He has also contributed myriad articles to esteemed journals and chapters to books. Recognized by Strathmore Who’s Who from 2001 to 2002, he was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Athens West Rotary Club in 1985. Likewise, he was also cited in the 20th edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest in 1985.
