121 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION assistant superintendent and administrative assistant beginning in 1972. From 1970 to 1972, he was the principal of Palmetto High School, having formerly served in the same position at Campbell High School from 1969 to 1970 and Russell High School from 1968 to 1969. At the inception of his career in 1957, he was a teacher at Campbell High School, serving in the role for a decade. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Education from the University of Georgia, Master of Education from Emory University and PhD in educational leadership from Georgia State University, Dr. Shields is a former serviceman of the U.S. Army and Army Reserves. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served six months in active duty for training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. A certified teacher in the state of Georgia, he was additionally an adjunct professor at Georgia State University from 1977 to 1984. Dr. Shields is most proud of his time spent in education, drawing joy from being an influence on students and colleagues alike. Believing that being an educator is the most important occupation that exists, he has been humbled by his experiences where former students tell him that he had a tremendous influence on their formative lives. Dr. Shields, who was selected for inclusion in the 22nd edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest in 1991, further believes that public education has a far more critical role in the lives and the enlightenment of the American people than is often recognized. He aspires to see a greater cultural appreciation for education in general and the vital role public schools play in the development of inspired and productive citizens. Married to Sue Bonner Shields since 1958, Dr. Shields has two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. I nfluenced to enter the education industry by his parents, who were both teachers, Dr. Hal Cline Shields amassed 34 years in his profession prior to his retirement in 1991.
