123 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION A tenured professor at Washburn University since 2011, Dr. Smith is a clinical social worker and educator with over 40 years of experience. Joining Washburn in 2008 as an Associate Professor, he taught social work as a tenured associate professor at the University of Wyoming, and as an adjunct professor at Kansas State University and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. During his clinical and academic career, he instructed/lectured nationally and internationally on individual/ family relationships, social problems, gender role socialization, emotions, emotional intelligence, multi-cultural competence, clinical therapy, Social Work Competencies, and Social Work Ethics and Values. Dr. Smith earned a BA in sociology from Hampton University, an MSW from Virginia CommonwealthUniversity, anMPA fromtheUniversity of LaVerne and a PhD in family life education and consultation from Kansas State University. A licensed specialist clinical social worker, he is on the board of directors of Valeo Behavior Health Care. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, Academy of Certified Social Workers, Council on Social Work Education, National Council of African American Men and Society of Spirituality in Social Work. Retiring from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel, Dr. Smith served with distinction in theMedical Service Corps as a social work officer with a Combat Medical Badge, an Expert Field Medical Badge, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendations Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Reserve Component Achievement Medals, a Southwest Asia Service Medal, a National Defense ServiceMedal, anArmed Forces Reserve Ribbon, an Army Service Ribbon, a Liberation of Kuwait Medal from the Kingdomof Saudi Arabia and a Kuwait Liberation Medal from the government of Kuwait. Due to his outstanding work in academia, Dr. Smith was inducted into the honor societies of Kappa Omicron Nu, Phi Alpha, Phi Beta Delta and the National Society of Scabbard and Blade, a military honor society.
