126 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine chemistry from the University of Kentucky, Dr. Steele completed postdoctoral research under the direction of Dr. Ivan Legg. Discovering his excitement for chemistry in the sixth grade, he decided upon pursuing the profession after watching Dr. John Ricketts give a presentation at his school. Dr. Steele was certified in handling controlled substances by the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. A contributor of several papers to scientific journals, Dr. Steele also presented oral papers at regional and national meetings. He was also afforded the opportunity to write MCAT questions for five years during his career. As a testament to his success, he was a grantee of the Mott Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Minority Schools Biomedical Support and National Science Foundation. Likewise, he earned the Clinical Chemistry Recognition Award, Outstanding Service Award and other certified medals. D r. Jack Steele is a nationally recognized chemist and educator who began his tenure at Albany State University in Georgia in 1970. Hired as an assistant professor of chemistry, he subsequently became an associate professor in 1975, full professor in 1980 and coordinator of chemistry and physics in 1985. Retiring in 2005, he also served as chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Physics for four years. Lending his expertise to the National Science Foundation, he has been an extramural reviewer since 1978. In previous years, he excelled in myriad roles with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the University of Kentucky and DePauw University. Likewise, he was a reviewer for the Journal of Chemical Education for 20 years. Dr. Steele is renowned for being the co-founder and chairman of the Southwest Georgia section of the American Chemical Society, where he has been a member for 50 years. Founded in 1986, the Southwest Georgia section was recognized by the society five years later, naming it “the best small section in the nation.” He has also maintained affiliation with the Research Society of North America, American Association for Clinical Chemistry, Georgia Academy of Sciences and Sigma Xi.
