Prior to this endeavor, she was a speech-language pathologist withWarren Woods Public Schools from 1978 to 1998 and Northville Public Schools from 1976 to 1978. Dr. Stevens is a notable co-founder of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, a charitable organization that provides students with scholarships. A passionate civil advocate, she also served the foundation as president of the board of directors in 2006 and 2007. Likewise, she was appointed to the Michigan Licensure Board of Speech-Language Pathology from 2009 until becoming vice chair in 2012. She has been certified in speech-language pathology through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association since 1977. Demonstrating versatility in her occupation, Dr. Stevens has contributed a number of articles to professional journals and chapters to books. She is a past fellow and legislative counselor of the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association, who honored her with 16 Continuing Education Awards between 1983 and 2018. She is a past president of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association and a recipient of its Honors in 2008. As a testament to her success and longevity in the industry, she was the recipient of the Clara B. Stoddard Award from Wayne State University in 1987. Inspired to enter her field by a cousin who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Dr. Stevens was also mentored by her grandmother, who was a respected teacher in the early 20th century. Further, she was influenced by her professors at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University, who provided significant guidance and knowledge. Happily married to her husband John, Dr. Stevens is the proud mother of three children and grandmother of four grandchildren. She currently resides in Berkley, Michigan.
