129 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine M arti Swanson is a distinguished retired secondary school educator who amassed 25 years in her profession. Serving Grant Community High School in Fox Lake, Illinois, for the duration of her career, she commenced her vocation in 1967 as an English teacher and served in that position for eight years. From there, she became a union president and chair of the English department in 1975 and classroom teacher in 1986 until her retirement in 1992. Alongside her primary responsibilities, Ms. Swanson was a local site coordinator for the American Federation of Teachers’ educational research and dissemination project from 1987 to 1994. She has also been a workshop presenter and consultant in affiliation with the Illinois Board of Education, as well as a member of the panel to select the Chicago Tribune’s all-state academy team. Locally involved, she has been a precinct committeeperson since 1992, having formerly served as treasurer of theWildflower Preservation and Propagation Committee from 1993 to 2004 and trustee of the Village of Ringwood from 1995 to 1999. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Education, with high honors, and Master of Education in education and English from Northern Illinois University, Ms. Swanson also completed additional graduate coursework at various universities. She has further authored numerous essays and was the editor of “The Grant Slant” newsletter from 1986 to 1988. She also contributed to “Five-Oh for Retirees” and “Citizens for the Ringwood Organization.” She has maintained affiliation with the Illinois Federation of Teachers, the Lake County Federation of Teachers, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, the Illinois Association of Teachers of English and the McHenry County Genealogical Society. In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Swanson was the recipient of the Superintendent’s Award from Grant Community High School and was named Retired McHenry County Teacher of the Teacher and Retired Lake County Teacher of the Year in 1998. She was also recognized as a unit honoree by the Lake County Retired Teachers Association in 2011. A celebrated listee, she has been featured in several Who’s Who publications.
