139 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine Air Force in 1960, serving to the rank of captain until his honorable discharge in 1962. During this time, he served in Japan and the Philippines at various military hospitals. Subsequent to his military service, Dr. Whitesides served as a professor of surgery at his alma mater beginning in 1962, teaching prospective medical students until his retirement from academia in 2000. During his tenure at Emory University, Dr. Whitesides was the junior chair of orthopaedic surgery and a chairman of the Emory Clinic Department with Emory Healthcare. Serving multiple universities in visiting professorships, such as the University of Southern California, Harvard University and Pennsylvania State University, he was additionally a McCarroll Lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis in 1978 and Alan DeForrest Smith Lecturer at Columbia University in 1974. He has further contributed myriad articles to esteemed journals and was the author and editor of “Spine Section” and “Evarts Surgery of Musculoskeletal System” in 1984. Since 1991, Dr. Whitesides has been a trustee of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, having previously served the organization as director and proctor. A past officer of the Twentieth Century Orthopaedic Association, he was a former president of the Georgia and Atlanta Orthopaedic Societies, as well as a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. As a testament to his longevity in the field, he was honored with an Annual Award from the Georgia Orthopaedic Society, two Leon Wiltse Awards from the North American Spine Society, the Kappa Delta Research Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Arnall Patz Lifetime Achievement Award from the Emory Medical Alumnus Association. Notably, he was highlighted in several Who’s Who publications beginning in 1990. I nterested in the sciences from an early age, Dr. Thomas Edward Whitesides Jr. decided to delve into themedical field after attending Emory University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1952 and MD in 1955.
