140 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Alfred B. Williams seemed to always take a particular liking to education, whether it was his own or teaching. Dr. Williams first received his Bachelor of Science from Oakland City University in 1963, then immediately went for his Master of Science in business education from Indiana University the next year. In 1974, he went back to school at Georgia State University to receive his PhD in educational administration and business communication. For one year, Dr. Williams taught at Arlington High School in Indianapolis, and then taught at Oakland City University for four years. He chose to take a bit of a career turn andwas an editor at SouthWesternPublishing Co. inCincinnati. However, teachingwas his calling, andwhile acquiring his doctorate, he taught at Georgia State University for two years and afterward at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. There, he taught his preferred subject of management and business communications from 1975 to 2002. He became chairman of the Department of Business Administration in 1986. During that same time from 1981 to 1993, Dr. Williams served as a consultant to the SouthWestern Publishing Co. He was an active researcher and publisher throughout his career. It was always important to Dr. Williams to have a steady job in which he could support himself. Being the child of a deep vein coal miner, he saw how his family’s fortunes were always tied to how well the mines were doing. He chose to join the Air Force out of high school in order to support himself, and later to afford tuition for college. After being honorably discharged, he began his endeavors in education. Dr. Williams credits his high school business teacher, Olive Smith, for helping himget into Indiana University. This relationship allowedDr. Williams to create similar close-knit relationships with his own students. Dr. Williams has been a member of the American Association of University Professors, the Louisiana Association of Higher Education, the Association of Business of Communicators, and several honor fraternities. He was awarded the Francis W. Weeks Merit Award from the Association for Business Communication in 1984 and several teaching awards. ALFRED B.
