Wolff enjoyed hiking as a teenager and often hiked the Catskill Mountains. Equally fascinated by geology, he decided to pursue geology as it was a meshing of his academic interests. Attending Hofstra University upon graduating from high school, he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1961, followed by a Master of Science from the University of Rochester in 1963. From there, Dr. Wolff obtained a PhD in geology from Cornell University in 1967. At the inception of his career in 1967, Dr. Wolff joined Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, as an assistant professor of geology. Soon ascending the ranks to associate professor in 1974 and full professor in 1981, he served in that capacity for the following 23 years until his retirement in 2004. During his tenure at Hofstra, he also served as chairman of the geology department for four wonderful years. He was also the lead author of the review textbook “Introductory Geology Course” and was granted the title of Grand Marshall during the final graduation of his tenure. Dr. Wolff is most renowned for his research on landward barrier island migration on Long Island beaches. He provided evidence for the lateral offset of barrier island splits on Long Island inlets as well, having conducted further research on inlet breaches at Little Pike’s Inlet at Westhampton Beach. For a decade, he maintained membership with the State Emergency Preparedness Commission science advisory committee in Albany, New York, having also served on the citizens’ advisory committee of the Long Island Regional Planning Board. Notably, he is a past executive secretary of the New York State Geological Association. The recipient of several grants within his areas of expertise, Dr. Wolff was named a Wilson P. Foss senior fellow by the New York State Geologic Survey during his doctoral studies. He is affiliated with the New York State Council of Professional Geologists, the Geological Society of America, the National Explorers Club of New York City, and the Society of Economic Geologists and Paleontologists.
