146 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine P assionate about writing and language from a formative age, Dr. Peter Bien is a writer, editor and educator who currently holds the title of emeritus professor of English and comparative literature at Dartmouth College. Drawing upon four decades of experience, he served Dartmouth College in several roles, including the Frederick Sessions Beebe ’35 Professor in the Art of Writing from 1989 until his retirement in 1997. Recently translating from Greek to English the novel “Rotten Town” by Gazmend Kapllani, whichwill be published in 2020, Dr. Bien is most recognized for “The Selected Letters of Nikos Kazantzakis,” which was published in 2012 and will be re-released in paperback in spring 2020. Dr. Bien holds a BA from Haverford College, and MA and PhD from Columbia University. He earned an honorary PhD from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2007, having been a frequent visiting professor at numerous schools in Greece, Australia and England. A life member of the Modern Language Association, he was also twice president of the Modern Greek Studies Association. He has been honored with the 2016 Nikos Kazantzakis Prize, the 2015 Translation Prize and the 1968 E. Harris Harbison Award for Distinguished Teaching. EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH AND COMPARATIVE LITERATURE Dartmouth College Hanover, NH P ossessing a passion for swimming and teaching from an early age, Sally Phillips Altman decided upon becoming a physical education teacher. Receiving a BA and MA from Stanford University, she has been a teacher and coach at numerous junior high and high schools, most recently including Cavitt Junior High School in Granite Bay, California, from 1982 until her retirement in 1996. Prior to this appointment, she was a faculty member at the Eureka School, Placer High School, Modesto High School, the College of Sequoias Evening School, Mount Whitney High School and Divisadero Junior High School. Impressively, Ms. Altman was a national synchronized swimming Gold Medal champion at the Pan American Games in 1955. Later on, she served as a synchronized swimming coach for the City of Roseville Recreation Department from 1976 to 1980. She was inducted into the Synchronized Swimming Hall of Fame in 2018. Locally involved as well, she was an instructor/trainer for the American Red Cross in Sacramento-Auburn, California, between 1988 and 1996. She is a past northern district president and unit president of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
