154 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine S upported by a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Case Institute of Technology and a Master of Science and PhD in geological engineering from the University of Arizona, Dr. Christopher C. Mathewson is a prominent geologist and educator who served Texas A&M University as a professor of applied geology from 1971 until attaining emeritus status through the Texas Board of Regents in 2011. Prior to this tenure, he was a commissioned officer in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 1966 to 1970. Recognized for his prestige, he contributed to over 70 funded research projects, over 125 published papers, over 700 professional and public presentations, and a textbook titled “Engineering Geology.” Notably, Dr. Mathewson served the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists as editor, section chair, executive director and president. He conducted numerous public education presentations and courses on the interaction between the public and their geological environment, geologic hazards, flooding and landscapes, and natural resources. As a testament to his contributions to geology, he received the 2019 James Hutton Lifetime Service Award from the National Association of State Boards of Geology. EDUCATOR, ENGINEER, GEOLOGIST Texas A&M University College Station, TX P olly Lyons grew up in a family that valued education. Upon the encouragement of her parents and sister, she decided to teach, particularly in the field of physical education due to her love for outdoor activities. Earning a Bachelor of Education and Master of Education from Ohio University, she served as a physical education teacher at the Fairfield Union High School and Lancaster City Schools for five years before accepting a position as an instructor of health and sport sciences at the Lancaster campus of Ohio University. Soon promoted to assistant professor, a role she held for 12 years, she was again promoted to associate professor. She served as an associate professor for a decade before retiring in 1993. Among her achievements, Ms. Lyons valued serving as chair of the tenure and information committee. She also enjoyed having a profound influence on her students during her tenure; some of her students still keep in touch. In light of her exceptional undertakings, she received the 20-Year Service Award from the Fairfield County chapter of the American Red Cross, as well as a Meritorious Award.
