165 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine F rom a young age, John William Fenker knew he wanted to be an engineer. He was curious about which engineering discipline was the most challenging, and when he was told that electrical engineering was the most difficult, he accepted the challenge and chose electrical engineering as his focus. Mr. Fenker graduated from Cleveland State University with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1955, and he then received an MBA from Case Western Reserve University in 1964. Additionally, Mr. Fenker graduated from an advanced management program at Harvard Business School in 1983. Before achieving his degrees, Mr. Fenker was in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He flew off U.S.S. Midway as aviation radioman gunner in SB2C dive-bomber in World War II. Since 1988, Mr. Fenker has been president of the Cleveland Health Education Museum, now merged with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. It was his first non-engineering position. From 1977 to 1988, Mr. Fenker worked at the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company as senior vice president of engineering and operations, vice president of power supply and vice president of administrative services. Mr. Fenker calls the opportunity at the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company to work on an important generator-related project the highlight of his career. As a young engineer just starting in the business, Mr. Fenker was proud to have been entrusted to work with the generator. He showed early on that he had what it took to be great in the engineering field. Despite no longer working as an engineer, Mr. Fenker is still connected to the profession. He holds membership with the Cleveland Engineering Society and the National Society of Professional Engineers, along with the Rotary Club of Cleveland, the United Way, Sigma Chi and Omega Delta Epsilon, the international honor society of economics. Mr. Fenker’s hobbies outside of these organizations include golf and duplicate bridge.
