Kaplan – a noted expert in satellite and launch vehicle systems design – has accrued five decades of experience in aerospace engineering and management. Currently, he serves as president of Launchspace Corporation, an educational and consulting organization that he founded in 1995. Launchspace notably provides instructor-led professional training and consulting services through development courses in every aspect of space flight, launch vehicles and spacecraft. Likewise, Dr. Kaplan is the current chief technology officer of Launchspace Technologies Corporation, which he co-founded in 2016. Boasting an impressive work acumen that has included administrative and management positions at the Florida Institute of Technology and Spacetech Inc., Dr. Kaplan participated in launch vehicle and satellite developments, trained numerous organizations and presented courses across the globe. At the inception of his career in 1968, he served as a professor of aerospace engineering at Pennsylvania State University for 13 years. He later returned to academia as a professor of practice in aerospace engineering at the University of Maryland, a role he has held since 2013. Elected a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Astronautical Society, Dr. Kaplan has patented four inventions on space systems and operations, contributed more than 100 scholarly articles, reports and papers, and authored a number of books. Citing the highlight of his career to be when he received a NASA grant to bring Skylab – a 70,000-lb. space station that had been left in space whose orbit began to decay – back to earth. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Kaplan was honored with an Outstanding Achievement Award in Research from Pennsylvania State University. He holds a Bachelor of Science in aeronautical engineering, with distinction, fromWayne State University, a Master of Science in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University.
