173 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D eciding to delve into engineering upon the suggestion of her brother, who was a civil engineer, Leticia Rustia Miranda attended the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, on a scholarship. During her first year, she obtained the highest score in mathematics, which inspired her to pursue chemical engineering as a career path. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1957, and soon thereafter, served the university as an assistant professor for the following 12 years. Relocating from the Philippines to the United States in 1970, Ms. Miranda served as an assistant programmer for the Tokheim Corporation in Fort Wayne, Indiana, from 1978 to 1979 before moving to Duke Power Company in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she was an analyst programmer for a decade. During this time, she attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, obtaining a Master of Science in Engineering in 1988. From 1989 to 1990, she served Joy Energy Systems in Charlotte as a process engineer. At the conclusion of her career in 1996, she was a chemical engineer for Process Heat, Inc., in Indian Trial, North Carolina, a position she held for four years. After retirement, she continued to be an independent consultant until 2001. Certified as an engineer-in-training in 1997, Ms. Miranda notably designed a 96% VOC destruction thermal oxidizer for fumes coming out of the driers that was included in the design of the conversion of a big boiler into a heat exchanger using the heat coming out of the oxidizer to produce steam. The steam produced is equivalent to three small boilers. In addition, she designed an FDA-approved steam drier for prescription drugs, included in the design are the sizing of steam coils, steam piping, fans and dampers. In light of her significant accomplishments, she was honored with the Centennial Engineering Gold Medal from the University of Santo Tomas in 2007.
