177 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A n accomplished metallurgical engineer for over 50 years, Dr. W. Joseph Schlitt was inspired by his father and grandfather – who were both registered professional engineers – to pursue the field. Discovering his aptitude for chemistry, Dr. Schlitt decided to delve into metallurgical processing due to the heavy influence of chemistry in the discipline. Earning a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1964, he then received a PhD in metallurgy from Pennsylvania State University in 1968. He is now a registered professional engineer. After earning a doctorate degree, Dr. Schlitt served Kennecott Minerals Company in Salt Lake City in several capacities, including as a scientist, senior scientist, manager of the hydrometallurgy department and principal program manager until his departure from the company in 1982. Soon thereafter, he was employed by Brown & Root, Inc., as a process staff manager, subsequently being promoted to manager of technology and product line manager of chemistry between 1983 and 1994. After these appointments, he served Aker-Kvaerner as the manager of Process Technology, director of metallurgy and principal consulting metallurgist for approximately one decade. Since 2005, he has been the president of Hydrometal Incorporated in Knightsen, California. Dr. Schlitt holds several patents and cites his greatest accomplishment as his involvement in high-end projects, particularly those which have progressed onward into production and operational stages. A distinguished member of the Society of Mining and former board of directors member of Metallurgy & Exploration and the Metallurgical Society, he has further contributed more than 60 technical articles to professional journals, trade publications and process volumes. Among the notable highlights of his career, Dr. Schlitt is proudest of receiving the Milton E. Wadsworth Award in recognition of a lifetime of contributions to metallurgical processing in 2009. He also twice received the Arthur F. Taggert Award in 1998 and 2006 and has been listed in numerous Who’s Who publications beginning in 1996. W.
