Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine 189 ENTREPRENEURS A native of Liverpool, United Kingdom, James F. Marten immigrated to the United States with his family in 1965 and quickly understood that the business and social climate, as well as the ready access to capital, were well suited for his ambitious nature. After wading the waters in the United States for three years, Dr. Marten commenced his 35-plus yearlong career as a venture capitalist, in which he founded, financed and guided eight successful companies, as well as chaired public companies on all three national stock exchanges. Currently, Dr. Marten serves as the director of Hood Laboratories, Inc., having previously excelled as chief executive officer of Applied Immune Science, Inc., chairman of MedChem, and chairman and chief executive officer of Ultracision, Inc. Impressively, he founded and served as chairman of MedChem Products and Delmed, Inc., when they were listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Among his notable achievements, Dr. Marten is proudest of the products he developed with Ultracision, including a scalpel that cuts without bleeding, which was developed from a knife that cut into bulletproof vests and was powered with ultrasonic energy. The recipient of a PhD in biomolecular structure from the University of Leeds, Dr. Marten served as president of its North American Foundation for a decade and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Likewise, during his time in the United States, he served as an associate professor at the Northeastern School of Business. Locally involved as well, he was on the board of trustees of Boston University Hospital for 13 years, the board of trustees of the Boston Chamber Music Society and its Foundation, and the Cohasset Conservation Commission for six years. Although in retirement, Dr. Marten continues to excel in his avocational endeavors, including painting and figure drawing. He has a studio in Rockland, Massachusetts. He is also a member of the Fourth Floor Artists Association and founded with his wife, Shirley Barker, the Marten Family Foundation, where they work with immigrants and other disadvantaged individuals to help them gain advantages of the American system.
