209 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine of Arts in government and politics from the University of Maryland in 1969. Beginning in 1970, Mr. Gerber worked on Capitol Hill as a legislative assistant to Senator Stephen Young and, later, for Congressman Bertram Podell. For 38 years, he represented the Communications Workers of America before Congress, rising to become the union’s Legislative Director, serving on the AFL-CIO’s Administrative Committee on Legislation. He advocated the enactment of laws to raise wages, improve employment conditions, and uplift the quality of life of working families. Mr. Gerber was instrumental in lobbying into law legislation to protect the net credited service rights of more than 500,000 telecommunications workers who were adversely affected by the divestiture of AT&T. He now serves as Senior Fellow for the Food Research and Action Center, an anti-hunger advocacy organization in the Nation’s capital. Mr. Gerber is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is on the Board of Directors of the Congressional Hunger Center and Americans for Democratic Action. An accomplished writer in his field, he has authored several chapters in books. Mr. Gerber participated as a Big Brother in the Big Brothers of the National Capital Area, working with fatherless boys who lived in poverty-stricken sections of Washington. He notes that among the life lessons he has learned is that he is a work in progress, always capable of improvement. He tries to stay in step with the sentiment expressed by Bob Dylan who wrote “those who are not busy being born are busy dying.” As a testament to his success, Mr. Gerber received a Special Recognition Award from the Food Research and Action Center in 2004. He was also highlighted in the 46th edition of Who’s Who in the East in 1996. A legislative activist for nearly half a century, Lou Gerber has served as a Congressional staff member, registered lobbyist, and prominent government relations executive in Washington, D.C. He majored in political science at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1966.
