213 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY A former chief historian of the national capital region of the National Park Service in Washington, Gary Thomas Scott drew upon over 40 years of experience in history and preservation prior to his retirement in 2012. At the inception of his career in 1969, he served as a history instructor at Tusculum College for one year before relocating to the United Kingdom, where he served in the same role at Herringswell Manor School until 1971. From there, he became an assistant to the clerk of the works at the Washington National Cathedral, which he cites as a career highlight. Working with stained glass artists and stonemasons, he is proud of being a contributor to the beauty of the cathedral. Commencing his tenure with the National Park Service in 1976, he served as an architectural historian, regional historian and historian before becoming chief historian in 1996. The recipient of a Bachelor of Arts from Southwestern University and Master of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mr. Scott has been active with the Historical Society of Washington since 1977 and the Southern Historical Association since 1980. A member of the Preservation Roundtable, he was also the president of the Victorian Society in Washington in the early 2000s. Likewise, he authored “The Kappa Alpha Order, 1865-1897” in 1994. Among the notable highlights of his career, Mr. Scott is proudest of being among the group that founded Clara Baron’s downtown Washington apartment, which has since been restored and turned into a museum. Discovering that the apartment was to be torn down, he sought support from Congress and the public, thus saving the historical landmark. As a testament to his success, Mr. Scott received the Distinguished Public Service Award and DC Mayor’s Historical Preservation Award from the Kappa Alpha Order in 1988 and 2005, respectively. A board member of the Association of Oldest Inhabitants in the City of Washington, he is also a 33rd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite and Cosmos Club of Washington.
