Bennett Jr. most recently served as chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Albany Medical Center, a position he held from 2010 until his retirement in 2018. Joining the Albany Medical Center as a staff member in 1991, he has also fulfilled a number of distinguished roles in both medicine and academia, including as an Alley-Sheridan Professor of Surgery at Albany Medical College from 2010 to 2016, medical director of cardiac surgery at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital from 2003 to 2010, and chief of cardiac surgery at Saint Peter’s Hospital from 1997 to 2010. Throughout his career, Dr. Bennett has also served such medical institutions as Albany Cardiothoracic Surgeons, P.C., the Guthrie Clinic, Robert Packer Hospital and the University of Texas at San Antonio beginning in 1980. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Fisk University, Dr. Bennett subsequently graduated cum laude from the Ohio State University with an MD in 1973. He completed an internship, residency and fellowship in surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital between 1973 and 1975 before completing a residency in surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Albany Medical Center in 1980. Dr. Bennett is renowned for initiating and establishing the practice of minimally invasive cardiac valve surgery in northeastern New York, and he served as co-chair of the cardiac heart team that established the Structural Heart Program at Albany Medical Center. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. Since 2000, he has been the president of the Upstate Society of Thoracic Surgeons. As a testament to his success in the field, Dr. Bennett has been named one of the Top Surgeons in America since 2002 and Best Doctors in America since 2001. The American Heart Association honored him with the Heart Hero Award in 2016, and he was elected to the CDPHP Physicians Academy in 2017.
