277 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine J ohn “Jack” D. Fassett is a dedicated utility executive and former lawyer who amassed more than 30 years of professional excellence in his fields. After serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, he attended the University of Rochester, where he graduated, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts in 1948. From there, he joined the Transportation Corps, serving as a first lieutenant legal officer at Fort Eustis, Virginia, until 1951. Desiring to delve into law, he attended Yale University, earning a JD, cum laude, in 1953. Mr. Fassett’s first appointment was a law clerk to Associate Justice Stanley F. Reed with the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington from 1953 to 1954. For the following four years, he served as an associate atWiggin&Dana inNewHaven, Connecticut, soon rising to the rank of partner, which he served from 1958 to 1973. During this time, he was also a faculty member of political science at Yale University for one year. From there, he joined the United Illuminating Company, where he was vice president, general counsel, president and chief executive officer through 1984. From 1985 until his retirement in 1987, he was chairman of the board. Alongside his primary appointments, Mr. Fassett is a prominent author, having written numerous books since 1991. Most recently, he wrote “Jack Fassett: A Memoir of Essays Vols. I & II” in 2013 and 2015. He also penned “The Shaping Years: A Memoir of My Youth and Education” and “New Deal Justice: The Life of Stanley Reed of Kentucky.” As a testament to his success, Mr. Fassett received an honorary LLD from Kentucky Wesleyan University in 1999 and honorary DHL from North Carolina Central University in 2016. However, he is proudest of his tenure as a law clerk to the U.S. Supreme Court during the 1953 term. He played a significant role in the famous decision in Brown v.
