At the inception of his career in 1978, he was a research and development engineer at the Mexican Petroleum Institute. Dr. Grossmann pursued formal education at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1974. He next received a Master of Science and PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London in 1975 and 1977, respectively. During his tenure at Carnegie Mellon since 1979, he has graduated over 60 PhD and 15 MS students. Dr. Grossmann has authored over 600 publications and collaborated extensively with industry through research projects. Dr. Grossmann is most proud of being able to mentor and educate the new generation of engineers, and he thoroughly enjoys watching his students grow and learn new concepts. Alongside his primary career responsibilities, he has served the chemical engineering section of the National Academy of Engineering as vice chair, chair and peer committee member. Likewise, he has maintained involvement with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Council for Chemical Research, and the Institute of Operations Research and Management Science. He has also been in the advisory board of a number of universities, and has served as co-chair of numerous conferences and workshops. Honored to receive the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1984, Dr. Grossmann has earned myriad other accolades since that time.
