218 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine include laboratory directorships at the University of Texas Medical Branch from 1993 to 1997 and at the University of Chicago Medical Center from 1984 to 1988. Dr. Bissell’s success would not have been possible without the advice and support of his many mentors, including Dr. Mary Herman and Dr. Klaus Bensch from Stanford University. Dr. Bissell has been a member of multiple organizations, including the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the College of American Pathologists, the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards, the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, the Clinical Laboratory Management Association and the Physicians for National Health Program. Additionally, Dr. Bissell was involved for a number of years with the leadership of the Clinical Laboratory Management Association, serving on their board of directors. In retirement, the emeritus enjoys genealogy, writing, traveling and playing the harp. I n medical school, Dr. Michael Gilbert Bissell’s original ambition was to be involved in brain research, and he was able to conduct such research with the help of a number of distinguished professors and mentors in pathology. Dr. Bissell graduated from the University of Arizona in 1969 with Bachelor of Science degrees inmathematics and chemistry. In 1975, he received anMD from Stanford University, followed by a PhD in neurobiology in 1977, and a Master of Public Health from the University of California Berkeley in 1978. In 2013, Dr. Bissell retired from his tenured professorship at The Ohio State University, an academic appointment that had included important service assignments (director of laboratory medicine, vice chair of pathology and associate dean of applied research). Before those appointments, Dr. Bissell was the director of clinical pathology at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1998 to 2000 and the vice president and medical director at the Nichols Institute Reference Laboratory in San Juan Capistrano, California, from 1991 to 1993. He was also the director of clinical pathology at the City of HopeMedical Center in Duarte, California, from 1988 to 1991.
