40 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT A nationally recognized painter, Clayton Rippey has demonstrated versatility in both his art and profession since the inception of his career in 1949. A former professor of art at Bakersfield College in California for 30 years, he also served as the chairman of the Department of Art at the college from 1968 to 1972 and as a professor of art at Maui Community College in Hawaii (now known as the University of Hawaii) from 1967 to 1968. During his tenure in academia, he was the owner of both the Rippey Gallery in Bakersfield and the Sea Spirit Gallery in Kapa’a, Hawaii. He also served as the director of exhibits at the Cunningham Museum in Bakersfield. Mr. Rippey focuses his art on landscapes, water scenes and wildlife, and he is also renowned for his various abstract paintings, sculptures, mosaics, printmaking and murals. More recently, he has delved into more abstract paintings, “chaos art” and “controlled art.” Noting that control is a reincarnation of its chaotic counterparts, he has explored this motif in his paintings and established a new genre of art. He has been featured in over 125 solo shows in galleries both domestic and overseas in states like California, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and Nevada, as well as Spain, France, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland. Mr. Rippey completed coursework at Northwestern University between 1941 and 1942 before studying art at Whitworth College from 1946 to 1947. Serving in the military during World War II, he earned a combat infantry badge, a Theatre Ribbon with three clusters, a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Stanford University, subsequently completing postgraduate art studies at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel Allende, Mexico, San Jose State University and the University of the Pacific. Encouraged by his parents to pursue artistic endeavors from a formative age, Mr. Rippey was also inspired by the San Francisco World’s Fair in 1937. He has been highlighted in the 23rd and 24th editions of Who’s Who in the West. Looking toward the future, he intends to display his abstract art in more galleries.
