42 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT J ournalism ran in Scott C. Schurz’s family and, despite being the third of four children, when it was his chance to join the profession, he dove in headfirst. Mr. Schurz graduated from Denison University in 1957 with a BA, and in 2017, received an honorary DHL. Mr. Schurz also received an honorary DHL from Indiana University in 2000. Before heading to the military, Mr. Schurz was an assistant instructor at the University of Maryland, and when he returned in 1960, he was an administrative assistant at the South Bend Tribune until 1966. He was also a circulation consultant at the Imperial Valley Press in El Centro, California, and then became assistant to the publisher of the Herald-Times, Inc. He became publisher and editor-in-chief, and later chairman of Hoosier Times, Inc., which included the Bloomington and Bedford newspapers, with the addition of other south-central Indiana newspapers. He now serves as director and chairman of Schurz Communications, Inc. Mr. Schurz finds the most rewarding part of his profession is interacting with people within the business and the community. He describes himself as a “people person” and has enjoyed meeting others. Mr. Schurz attributes his success to having a good education, having the ability to listen, and accepting his mistakes. He also calls marrying his wife, Kathryn Joan Foley, the best decision of his life. Mr. Schurz is proud to be part of various associations, particularly the Inter-American Press Association, which named him an honorary life president. He sits on the board of directors for the Indiana University Foundation and was president of the Hoosier Press Association, Inland Press Association and International Newspaper Marketing Association. He has also been associated with the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, International Press Institute, Newspaper Association of America, of which he became president of that association’s foundation, and World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers. Mr. Schurz finds it important to recognize one’s own privilege and to pay back your accomplishments to the community.
