50 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Dorothy E. Farrington Caram engaged in her profession in light of the influence of her father, who served as a professor and head of the Department of Classical andModern Language at the University of Houston. Commencing her career in academia in 1952, she served as an assistant student teacher of physical education for females at Rice University before becoming a fifth grade teacher at the Houston Independent School District. After serving as a high school Spanish teacher with the school district, she was employed by St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Houston as a teacher and a substitute teacher at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Caram served in a plethora of executive roles with her husband’s medical office, as well as Web-Care Services, Inc., IDM Satellite Communications of Texas, Inc., and the University of Houston before her retirement in1995. Although retired, she continued toserve as anadministrator and volunteered as an educational consultant at the University of Houston. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Rice University and EdD from the University of Houston, Dr. Caram also pursued postgraduate coursework at the University of Madrid. She has sat on the leadership council of the Houston GPS and the board of the Houston Educational Excellence Program since 2017, having previously been involved with such programs as the Texas Commission on the Arts, the United Way, the Baylor College of Medicine, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Likewise, she is a member of the Hispanic Health Coalition, chair of the advisory board of the Mexican Institute of Greater Houston, and advisor and ambassador of International Ballet Folkorico. Dr. Caram has accrued numerous accolades. The recent recipient of the Hispanic Woman of the Year Award from Solo Magazine, she also received the Reconocimiento Ohtli Award from the Government of Mexico and Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Houston. Further, she was honored with the Woman of Vision Award from the Delta Gamma Foundation and was recognized with the eponymously-named Dorothy F. Caram Leadership Award from the UnitedWay. DOROTHY E.
