52 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine BUSINESS SERVICES, CONSULTING AND HUMAN RESOURCES E ncouraged from a young age to value education, Willie Mae Artis- Chatman was inspired by her parents to place importance on learning. She earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts from Western Michigan University, having thereafter pursued postgraduate coursework at Wayne State University. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1970, she was employed by Northern High School in Detroit as a teacher of business education for eight years before becoming head of the Department of Business and Vocational Education in 1979, a position she held for 28 years until her retirement in 2007. During her tenure, she also served as an adjunct professor at Henry Ford College and educational consultant for Newsweek Magazine. The recipient of certifications in management, administration, and secondary continuing vocational and competency-based education, Ms. W. Artis-Chatman has always been vocal about her advocacy for breast cancer awareness, having been a speaker atmultiple events. Civically involved aswell, she started the first African American “Family and Friends Day” at her church, the Fellowship Chapel in Detroit, Michigan. She has also maintained affiliation with the Detroit Association of Black School Educators, the Detroit Business Education Association, the Michigan Business Education Association and the NAACP. One of seven young African-American women who were on the honor roll at her high school, Darkside, Ms. W. Artis-Chatman was notable for being recognized in The Jackson Blazer newspaper for her early achievements. Demonstrating proficiency and unrelenting passion for education into adulthood, she received a Vocational Education and Career Development Award from the Michigan Department of Education in 1974 and three Certificates of Recognition fromDetroit Public Schools in 1974, 1977 and 1979. Impressively, she was further highlighted in the 20th edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest. Looking toward the future, Ms. W. Artis-Chatman intends to continue being a model of inspiration for her friends and family. She also plans to continue serving as a mentor to several individuals within her local community.
