60 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine BUSINESS SERVICES, CONSULTING AND HUMAN RESOURCES L ee Thayer first gained recognition around the world as one of the founders of the field of communication in the 1940s and has written widely on that subject, which he sees as the infrastructure for all things human. He spent his early years on his maternal grandparents’ small farm in Southeastern Kansas, where he has written that there is no better launching pad for learning duty and responsibility. Dr. Thayer’s ideas have influenced scholars and practitioners for more than six decades. His 25 books reveal his lifelong penchant for the tools of life-making – both individual and organizational. His first love was music, both performance and composing, for which he was offered a scholarship to the Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He has degrees in the humanities, social sciences and engineering. After serving as Operations Officer in the Naval Reserve, he attended the University of Oklahoma, where he earned his PhD in clinical and social psychology in 1963. Dr. Thayer has achieved worldwide recognition in two careers. In addition to his many Distinguished Visiting Professorships and Fulbright Scholar award to Scandinavia, he was a Ford Foundation Fellow at the Harvard Business School, a Fellow of the Foundation for Economic Education and a Danforth teacher. He was founder and editor of the international journal of “Communication and the Human Condition” for 10 years. At the University of Iowa, he served as the first Gallup Professor and organized six international symposia on the world’s problems. Dr. Thayer’s other career for 55-plus years was a global consultant for CEOs worldwide, coaching organizational and institutional leaders how to make better-performing organizations. He has conducted seminars for several hundred groups of CEOs around the world. He started as a problem- solver for the Fortune 500; however, he prefers mid-sized organizations, where the results can be more easily seen. His original executive post at Pratt & Whitney evolved into his unique consulting career. The Thayer Institute carries on his seminal work and his two most recent books are “The 13 Insanities of Modern Organizations” and “The Problem.” DR.
