Civically involved as well, he was the co-director of the Family Names Booth at the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio from 1985 to 2007. Dr. Baird draws upon a Bachelor of Arts from Midland College, and a Master of Arts and PhD fromtheUniversityof Texas at Austin. Conducting research on multicultural cemeteries in his spare time, he has been a grantee of Educational Training, Inc., the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington. He maintains affiliation with the American Dialect Society, TESOL International Association, the Linguistic Society of America and the American Culture Association, among others. In light of his many successes in the field, he was selected for inclusion in the 25th edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest in 1997. D r. Scott James Baird is an influential professor of English to speakers of other languages who retired from his profession in 2009 after accruing 48 years in the field. Serving Trinity University in San Antonio for the latter portion of his career, he was a professor of the English language from 1974 until attaining emeritus status in 2009. Notably, he also spent eight years working and teaching in Japan, first in Kumamoto as a high school teacher from 1961 to 1964 and then in Mitaka as a professor at the International Christian University from 1969 to 1974. During his time in Japan, Dr. Baird became fluent in Japanese and notes that learning a new culture was a most fulfilling experience of his life. A contributor of revisions, articles and columns to popular and professional publications, Dr. Baird served as a lecturer for the Fulbright Association in Japan in 1970 and 1972.
