68 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION A native of Blackburn, England, Dr. Stephen J. Bury enjoyed visiting the library as a child. Earning a Bachelor of Arts in modern history, with honors, from the University of Oxford, he discovered that he could enter the world of library sciences during his graduate studies. He obtained a diploma in librarianship from the University College London and went on to attend Birkbeck, the University of London, receiving a Master of Arts in Victorian studies and PhD. Commencing his career as an assistant librarian at the Chelsea College of Arts in London in 1978, he was promoted to librarian in 1985, holding the position for four years. He subsequently served as head of learning resources, departing from the college in 2000. From there, Dr. Bury served as head of the modern English collections and head of the European and American collections at the British Library in London between 2000 and 2010. Immigrating to the United States thereafter, he has since served as chief librarian at the Frick Art Reference Library in New York. A frequent contributor of articles to magazines, Dr. Bury is a prolific author, having written such works as “Breaking the Rules,” “Artists’ Books” and “Artists’ Multiples.” He was also a contributing author to the Dictionnaire de l’Art Moderne and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. He previously served as an advisory editor for the Benezit Dictionary of Artists and is on the board of the Metropolitan New York Library Council and the Center for Book Arts in New York. When asked of his career highlights, Dr. Bury is most proud of starting the web archive at the British Library and the United Kingdom web archive at the House of Commons. Likewise, he is gratified to have gained independent research organization status for the British Library of the Arts and Humanities Research Council. As a testament to his success, Dr. Bury received the H.W.C. Davis Prize from the University of Oxford during his undergraduate studies. Likewise, he was featured in the 13th and 18th editions of Who’s Who in the World, as well as the 68th through 70th editions of Who’s Who in America. STEPHEN J.
