Renowned for a scholarship started in his name at Washburn University for students majoring in political science who are pursuing law school, Dr. Cann is a former faculty representative for the Washburn Board of Regents. A past president of the Kansas chapter of the American Association for Public Administration, Dr. Cann has been the recipient of a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in social science from North Dakota State University since 1970 and 1972, respectively. Subsequently, he graduated from Purdue University with a PhD in political science in 1977. In light of his expertise in the field, he is a past mediator volunteer for the Topeka Victim/Offender Mediation Project and Parent-Adolescent Mediation Project in Kansas. He also served as the methodologist for the Kansas Judicial Council death penalty advisory committee. Notably, Dr. Cann has contributed many articles to professional journals and authored the fourth edition of “Administrative Law” in 2006. He further contributed to “Politics in Brown and White: Resegregation in America,” Volume 88 #2, Judicature, in 2004, as well as a final report sent to the Kansas Legislature in 2014. As a testament to his success, Dr. Cann received an award from the Heartland Mediators Association in 2014 and a President’s Award for “significant contributions to the promotion of mediation and for increasing public awareness of conflict resolution.” Listed in Montclair’s Who’s Who in College Faculty in 2011 and 2012, he is also a two-time listee of Who’s Who Among American Teachers. A celebrated Marquis listee, he was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in American Politics. D r. Steven J. Cann is an accomplished professor of political science who served Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, from 1985 until his retirement in 2019.
