70 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D r. Diana Bartelli Carlin has had a plethora of experiences within educationandother fields. She isprofessor emeritaof communication at Saint Louis University, where she served as associate provost for graduate and global education through 2015. She also worked at the University of Kansas as a professor of communication studies for 24 years and served as dean of the graduate school and international programs for seven years; Washburn University; and Topeka and Rossville High Schools. Outside of teaching, she was vice president of Clark Publishing Company for a decade and an assistant to the Governor of Kansas for two years. Dr. Carlin receivedaBS andMA in education. She obtainedher PhD in speech communication at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1985. Dr. Carlin chose this career path because she had outstanding teachers her whole life; she found the career to be very inspirational. She wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and chose to through research, teaching and service. The most rewarding thing Dr. Carlin said she has done were her five trips to Afghanistan, where she taught public speaking and debate to university students who have gone on to study at major universities abroad, worked for ministries, media outlets and businesses in Afghanistan, and represented Afghan youth at the United Nations. Dr. Carlin is also the recipient of many awards. Among them are admission to the Central States Communication Hall of Fame, the University of Nebraska Alumni Association’s Alumni Achievement Award, the Fulbright Specialist Award to Myanmar (Burma), and the Fulbright International Education Administrators Award to France. Dr. Carlin was president of the Central States and Kansas Communication Associations and served on the board of directors of the Council of Graduate Schools and NAFSA: Association of International Educators. She served on the advisory board for the Commission on Presidential Debates for 13 years. She is notable for her contributions as a co-author on the books “The Third Agenda inU.S. Presidential Debates,” “The 1992 Presidential Debates in Focus,” “Gender and the American Presidency,” “Mastering Competitive Debate,” and research articles on political debates, women in politics and international education.
