72 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D r. Joseph Cerny III is a retired chemistry educator and administrator who amassed 52 years in his field prior to his retirement in 2013. Hired by the University of California Berkeley in 1961, he served the university in numerous capacities, starting his tenure as an assistant professor of chemistry. Holding the position for six years, he was soon promoted to associate professor in 1967 before becoming chairman of the Department of Chemistry in 1975. From 1979 to 1984, he served as head of the Nuclear Science Division and the associate director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. From there, he became the dean of the Graduate Division until 2000. Concluding his career in 2013, he was a professor of chemistry for 13 years. To prepare for his career, Dr. Cerny pursued formal education at the University of Mississippi, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1957. Completing postgraduate studies on a Fulbright scholarship at the University of Manchester in England for the following year, he returned to the United States and attended the University of California Berkeley, earning a PhD in nuclear chemistry in 1961. During his career, Dr. Cerny heldmany executive roles with organizations, including the Association of Graduate Schools, where he was vice president and president. Maintaining affiliation with the American Chemical Society and American Physical Society, he is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Likewise, he served as chair of the nuclear physics panel in the physics commission at the National Academy of Sciences, as chair of the subcommittee on education at the Nuclear Science Advisory, and sat on the advisory council of the university relations task force at NASA. A contributor of articles to esteemed scientific journals, Dr. Cerny edited four volumes of “Nuclear Reactions and Spectroscopy.” He was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame at the University of Mississippi and has accrued myriad accolades, such as the A. Von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, the Nuclear Chemistry Award from the American Chemical Society and the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award from the Atomic Energy Commission.
