Allan Collins has been intrigued by general semantics – a system of linguistic philosophy that explores the nature of words and symbols in their relation to language – from a formative age. After reading the book “Science and Sanity” by semantics founder Alfred Korzybski, Dr. Collins decided to pursue the discipline. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Master of Arts in communication sciences and PhD in psychology in 1962 and 1970, respectively. During his doctoral studies, he commenced his career as a senior scientist at Bolt, Beranek & Newman, Inc., a role he held for 20 fruitful years before being promoted to principal scientist for the following decade. Delving into academia, Dr. Collins served Northwestern University as a professor of learning sciences from 1989 until attaining emeritus status in 2005. During his tenure, he published the first article on retrieval time from semantic memory, which to this day remains his most downloaded paper. He also cites his work on cognitive apprenticeship with J.S. Brown to be a career highlight. Mentored by numerous individuals, he notes that significant influences on his professional and personal lives have been R. Quillian, with whom he launched research on human semantic memory, and John H. Holland, who is renowned for his work on adaptive systems theory. A prolific author as well, Dr. Collins has written a number of books, most recently including “What’s Worth Teaching: Rethinking Curriculum in the Age of Technology” in 2017.
