78 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D rawing upon four decades of practiced experience in academia, Dr. Carl Neumann Degler was a respected educator of American history who served as a longtime professor at Stanford University for 30 years. Attaining emeritus status in 1990, he also acted as the Margaret Byrne professor of American history for 18 years. Prior to these endeavors, Dr. Degler served Vassar College as a faculty member, professor of history and chairman of the department between 1952 and 1968. Likewise, he was employed by such universities as the City College of New York, Adelphi College, New York University and Hunter College as an adjunct professor beginning in 1947. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Upsala College in 1942, Dr. Degler was drafted into the U.S. Air Force, where he was a weather observer at an air force base near Calcutta, India. Receiving the G.I. Bill in 1945, he attended Columbia University, where he earned a Master of Arts in 1947 and PhD in 1952. Impressively, he received honorary doctorates from Upsala College, Ripon College and Colgate University. Featured in the article “A New Americanism: Why A Nation Needs a National Story” in Foreign Affairs in 2019, Dr. Degler has also authored several acclaimed books including “Age of Economic Revolution” in 1967, which was revised in 1976. His book, “Neither Black Nor White,” was the co-winner of the 1971 Beveridge Prize and winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Bancroft Prize in 1972. Likewise, his book “In Search of Human Nature: The Decline and Revival of Darwinism in American Social Thought” garnered the 1991 Ralph Waldo Emerson Prize. He has also been a prolific editor and sat on numerous editorial boards. As a testament to his success in the industry, Dr. Degler was named a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies, the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In remembrance of his profound legacy, Dr. Degler has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who for his contributions to the worlds of academia and history.
