81 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine S upported by 38 years of practiced experience, Delaine Eastin commenced her career in 1971 as an instructor at various community colleges throughout California. From 1979 to 1984, she was an accounting manager for Pacific Bell before serving as a corporate planner for Pacific Telesis Group until 1986. A former assemblywoman for the California State Legislature from 1986 to 1994, she subsequently was elected superintendent of public instruction for the State of California DELAINE EASTIN EDUCATOR, SUPERINTENDENT (RETIRED) Mills College Davis, CA EDUCATION and presided over the California Education Department until 2003. During the latter portion of her career, she acted as an executive director for the National Institute for School Leadership and a distinguished professor of educational leadership at Mills College before retiring in 2009. The recipient of a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California Davis and Master of Arts in political science from the University of California Santa Barbara, Ms. Eastin was an ex-officio member of the board of trustees of California State University and the board of regents of the University of California. Civically involved as well, she was commissioner for the Commission on the Status of Women for 13 years while also sitting on the board of directors for CEWAER (now California Women Lead) for 15 years. Much earlier in her career, she was a planning commissioner for the City of Union City, California, as well as an elected member of the City Council, having thereafter been president of the Alameda County Solid Waste Management Authority. She was also chair of the Alameda County Library Commission. Ms. Eastin had an elementary school in Union City named in her honor, as well as an early childhood developmental center in Fremont, California, and a high school art gallery in Healdsburg, California. While serving as superintendent, she also received $2.3 billion to reduce class sizes from kindergarten through third grade in California. As a testament to her success, Ms. Eastin has accrued myriad accolades, including the Janet Rankin Courage to Run Award from the National Women’s Political Caucus and the California Women Lead Luminary Award in 2019. Beginning in 1988, she has also been honored with numerous awards from such entities as the American Library Association, the California Association for Counseling and Development, and the California Teachers Association, among others.
