261 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Johan Thomas Zwaan was influenced by his family to enter medicine, having come from a medical lineage. Born in the Netherlands, he attended the University of Amsterdam, where he earned an MD in 1960 and PhD in 1963. Immigrating to the United States soon thereafter, he completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine before serving as an associate professor of anatomy at the University of Virginia for seven years. From there, Dr. Zwaan became an associate professor of anatomy and ophthalmology at the Harvard Medical School from 1971 to 1989. He started at the University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio in 1989, where he was a professor of ophthalmology, cellular biology and pediatrics for five years before serving as a clinical professor of ophthalmology from 1996 to 2017. During his tenure in education, Dr. Zwaan also served as a senior academy consultant in ophthalmology at the King Khalid Eye Specialists Hospital in Saudi Arabia from 1994 to 1997. He was also a senior examiner for the Arab Board of Ophthalmology in Syria from 1996 to 1998 and a study section member of the National Institutes of Health from 1973 to 1977. A past colonel MC of the U.S. Army Reserve, Dr. Zwaan is a lifetime member of the Association of Military Surgeons and the Reserve Officers Association, as well as a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Zwaan has contributed more than 200 chapters to books and articles to professional journals, and he has authored 80 peer-reviewed papers. Authoring and editing “Decision Making in Ophthalmology” in 1992, he subsequently contributed to the following two editions in 2000 and 2014. Currently, he is working on two books, one a memoir about his experiences with World War II and one about case histories during his time in clinical practice.In light of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Zwaan received the Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health from 1972 to 1975. Married with five children and four grandchildren, he enjoys writing, photography and gardening in his spare time.
