Lee quote, “Do your duty in all things… you cannot do more; you should never wish to do less,” Richard Bender Abell is a retired federal judiciary member who served as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1967 to 1969. Attributing his success to his faith in God, who guided him toward an honorable path in law, he commenced his career as an assistant district attorney in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and associate with Reilly & Fogwell in 1974. While pursuing these roles, he became deputy sheriff of Chester County for two years before serving as a staff member to Sen. Richard Schweiker in Washington from 1979 to 1980. Soon thereafter, Mr. Abell was the director of the Office of Program Development with the Peace Corps for two years, deputy assistant attorney general in the Office of Justice Programs with the U.S. Department of Justice for three years and an assistant attorney general with the U.S. Department of Justice for four years, appointed by President Ronald Reagan. Spending the latter portion of his career as a special trial judge and special master with the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, he ultimately accrued 46 years in the field. To prepare for his career, Mr. Abell pursued formal education at George Washington University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in international affairs in 1966 and JD in 1974. Formerly a member of several policy boards, advisory committees and review boards during his tenure in law, Mr. Abell also briefly served in academia as an adjunct faculty member at West Chester State University and Delaware Law School between 1975 and 1977. Mr. Abell is a U.S. Army veteran who has been decorated with multiple accolades during his service. Receiving a Purple Heart, Commendation Medal for Heroism, Air Medal and Combat Infantryman’s Badge in 1970, he served for two years before his military retirement for wounds received in combat in 1971. Impressively, he also received a Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal from the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 2000.
