282 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine Equally passionate about his community, Mr. Hoffman has maintained involvement in several civic institutions and societies. The former general campaign chair of the Monadnock United Way, he also served the organization on their board of directors, executive committee, finance committee, planned giving committee and long range planning committee. Furthermore, he was a trustee of the Hoffman Family Foundation, president of the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, board vice president and treasurer of the New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits, and founder and advisor of Arts Alive! In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Hoffman recently earned the New England and Recovery Celebration Annual Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence in 2018, preceded by the Award for Contributions to Health and Welfare of the Community from the Cheshire Health Foundation and the Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award. J ohn E. Hoffman Jr. was influenced to enter the field of law after discovering his initial interest in psychology, particularly how individuals affect other people’s thinking. Receiving a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Princeton University and JD from Harvard University, he began his tenure with the multinational law firm Shearman & Sterling in 1960. Starting as an associate and climbing the ranks to partner by 1968, he served in that role for 24 years until his retirement in 1992. Alongside his primary responsibility at the firm, he was also a member of the management committee. Likewise, he maintained involvement with the president’s council of Keene State College, the council of advisors with the Cheshire Medical Center and the Northeast advisory board of Caron Treatment Centers, among others. Mr. Hoffman was admitted to practice law in New York in 1961, as well as before several circuit and district courts. A past first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, he later co-authored “American Hostages in Iran: The Conduct of a Crisis” in 1985. Impressively, he is a fellowof the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Paul Harris fellow of Rotary International.
