322 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r.MemoryPatienceFredrikaElvin-Lewis earnedherBA inbacteriology and genetics from the University of British Columbia; medical technology certifications in Canada (RT) and the U.S. (MT) (ASCP); MS in medical microbiology from the University of Pennsylvania; MS in virology and epidemiology from Baylor University; and PhD in medical microbiology from the University of Leeds. She has honorary DSc degrees fromAndrews University and the University of British Columbia and is a dual Canadian and American citizen. An educator and prominent infectious disease microbiologist and ethnobotanist, Dr. Elvin-Lewis has contributed to the medical, dental and botanical professions in various ways. She spent 53 years as an academic at Washington University in St. Louis. She was affiliated with the Schools of Botany, Dental Medicine, and Arts and Sciences as an adjunct professor of biology from 1968 to 2018 and became a Faculty Scholar in the Institute for Public Health in 2015. When she became emerita in 2018, she retained the title of professor of microbiology and ethnobotany in biomedicine. Dr. Elvin-Lewis’ publications reflect her career and include those in microbiology; virology; medical/dental microbiology including “Chlamydia,” epidemiology, ethnobotany, botany and pharmacognosy; safety issues of herbal remedies; and legal aspects of traditional knowledge. She has co- authored books and has been a contributing author. Her most significant work has been the two editions of “Medical Botany, Plants Affecting Human Health” she co-authoredwith her botanist husband, Dr. Walter H. Lewis. These publications are lauded worldwide as valuable texts and reference books. Noteworthy awards include the Silver Medal, “Primio Martin de la Cruz” from the Mexican Academy of Traditional Medicine; Distinguished Economic Botanist from the Society of Economic Botany; andDr. E.K. Janaki Ammal Gold Medal from the Society of Ethnobotanist. The first North American wild rose in over a century, Rosa memoryae L., was named in her honor in 2016; she was cited as a Significant Canadian Scientist at the Canada 150: Discovery Way Exhibit; and in 2019, was featured on a banner in Ontario, honoring 30 Canadian woman in STEMwho contributed to Canada’s scientific community.
